Follow Me Week 10

TRANSCRIPTION:

Welcome to week 10 of your Follow Me discipleship journey. This week we will continue to tackle the concept of LOVING like Jesus by answering the question, “Why and How do I serve like Jesus?”

Now, when I say “Serve like Jesus” I’m not just talking about volunteering at a food bank once a year or helping at church on a Sunday morning. I’m talking about living a lifestyle of service — the kind Jesus modeled for us, right up to His final breath.

Mark 10:45. It says:

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Let that sink in. The Son of God — the King of kings — didn’t come demanding to be honored. He came to serve. And not just in convenient, comfortable ways, but in ways that cost Him everything.

Picture this: Jesus and His disciples are sitting down for what would be their final meal together — the Last Supper. If you or I were there, we might expect a time of deep gratitude, maybe even some emotional reminiscing. Instead, Luke 22 tells us, “a dispute arose among them over which of them would be considered the greatest.”

In that moment, when Jesus could have rebuked or dismissed them, He instead leaned in and flipped the script. He said, “I am among you as one who serves.” Then He physically showed them what He meant — He got up, wrapped a towel around His waist, and washed their feet. What a powerful image that paints - while the disciples are arguing over who is the greatest, Jesus kneels down and serves in the most humble way possible in that moment!

This is the heart of Jesus. Not position. Not power. But service.

Now, let’s be real. Serving doesn’t come naturally to most of us. Our instinct is to prioritize ourselves — our time, our energy, our comfort. Maybe we’re willing to serve when it’s convenient, but what about when it’s costly?

Maybe you’ve asked the same question a teenager might ask when it’s time to take out the trash: “Why do I have to do this?” Why do I have to show up early, stay late, give my time, give my money, help people who don’t even seem to appreciate it?

The answer lies in Romans 8:29 — we are being shaped into the image of Jesus. That means our lives should begin to look like His — and His life was one of radical, consistent service to others. From His first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding to His last breath on the cross, Jesus gave everything He had for others.

So… How do we serve?

Serving like Jesus doesn’t require a title or a spotlight. It starts with meeting the needs right in front of you. Maybe it’s taking a meal to a sick neighbor, leading a small group when no one else will step up, or just grabbing coffee with someone who needs encouragement. Sometimes, it’s showing up again and again even when no one notices. Sometimes serving comes in the form of giving financially to help meet a need!

No matter the method, here’s the hard truth — serving like Jesus isn’t just about actions. It’s about the heart behind them. It’s not just doing something good — it’s loving people deeply, even when they make bad choices. It’s showing grace instead of judgment. It’s staying committed long after the applause stops.

Serving like Jesus means showing up when it’s inconvenient. Loving when it’s hard. Giving when it stretches you. It’s not about being the “greatest” — it’s about choosing to be the least.

Yes, that’s hard. That’s the point. It was hard for Jesus, too. He wept. He felt pain. He gave everything. But that’s the path to true transformation.

So this week, as you spend time in prayer each day, take some time to ask God — Where are You calling me to serve? Who are You asking me to love like You do? And then, take a step. One small act of service. One neighbor. One sacrifice. That’s where it begins.

Because the more we serve like Jesus, the more we become like Jesus.
