Follow Me Week 5

Updated: Jun 6

TRANSCRIPTION:

Congratulations!  You have officially completed Part 2: Starting to follow Jesus!  I hope you have learned more about Him, more about yourself, and grown in relationship with Him over these past 4 weeks.  Now that you have laid a solid foundation of what it looks like to follow Jesus, this week we will begin to journey through Part 3: Living Like Jesus!

Now, let me just put your mind at ease - living like Jesus does not mean there is an expectation for perfection!  If that were true none of us would be candidates for this journey!  So though God desires us to live perfect lives, His expectation for us is to make progress!  Yes, He longs for our best, but He meets us where we are, looking for growth and not perfection.

So what will this study on living like Jesus consist of?  Though there are many topics we could cover and teachings we could share, in this resource we are going to focus on what it looks like to live like Jesus when it comes to Worship, the Holy Spirit, Fasting, and Rest.

This week our focus will be on Worship - what it is, how we do it, and what it looked like in the life of Jesus.

When we say the word worship in our modern culture, one of two definitions likely come to mind.  Either a deep admiration of devotion to someone or something OR the music at the beginning of a church service.  And though both of those definitions possess aspects of worship, neither truly defines what worship IS!

As is true with trying to answer the question “Who is God?”, it is difficult to fully answer the questions “What is Worship?” in a direct and succinct way.  But the best way I have found to define it is this:

Worship is adoration (or a deep love and respect) for who God is!

Did you notice that I said adoration for who God IS and not what God has done??   Though both of these things are deeply connected, they both reveal different aspects of our relationship with Him.

Thinking of what God has done limits us to his actions.  Now, I use the term ‘limits’ quite loosely because God has done more for us than we could ever count, think up, or imagine.  So saying we are limited in giving him thanks seems like a ridiculous statement; however, there is so much more to God than just what He has done, is doing, and will do in and through us!

Who God IS speaks to God’s character, nature and identity - the core of His being and the unchanging truths that define Him. Why does this matter?

Because God isn’t just defined by what He has done, but by who He is.  And it is knowing who He is that helps us move from living a life of thankfulness for His blessings to living a life of adoration of who He is - a perfect, personal, and powerful God worthy of our worship and trust.

The Bible gives us many examples of this, like the woman with the alabaster jar in Luke 7. She boldly interrupted a dinner party just to pour out her love at Jesus’ feet. No music. No microphone. Just tears, perfume, and unashamed worship.

So if you are under the impression that worship is the songs we sing at the beginning of service each Sunday morning then get ready to have your world turned upside down!   Because even though that is an aspect of worship and an avenue by which we can express our adoration for Him and to Him - it is absolutely NOT worship.

Worship is so much more than private devotion. It’s found in our work, our creativity, how we treat others, and yes—even in the way we handle our thoughts. Romans 12 calls us to be living sacrifices—to live in a way that everything we do becomes worship.

In church, corporate worship expresses this same adoration with others through prayer, scripture, singing, and community. But even if you’re not musical, God has equipped you to worship—with your voice, your hands, your heart, and your life.

So here’s your challenge this week: don’t limit worship to Sunday mornings. Worship while you work, while you serve, while you rest. Let it flow from every part of your life, because our God is worthy of it all.  And don’t limit worship to merely being thankful for all He has done.

This week, as you complete the daily devotions you are going to learn more about the importance of worship, the power behind worship, and what worship looked like in the life of Jesus.  And as you do, I am confident that you are going to begin to see your worship life shift into true adoration for who God IS and not just for what He has done!
