Follow Me Week 6

TRANSCRIPTION:

Happy Monday Everybody! I hope you are enjoying this Follow Me Discipleship journey so far! I know I have! This week we will continue on our journey of learning to live like Jesus by tackling the topic of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy spirit is one of the most misunderstood - but absolutely vital - aspects of of our walk and relationship with God. When people think of the Holy Spirit, they often picture a ghost, a dove, or some mysterious force. But the truth is, the Holy Spirit isn’t a “what” or an “it”—He’s a “He.” He is a person. And not just any person - but God Himself.

A.W. Tozer once said, "When we have the Holy Spirit, we have all that is needed to be all that God desires us to be." Think about that for a second. Everything we need—strength, guidance, wisdom, love, courage—it’s all found in the Holy Spirit. And yet, many of us go through our spiritual lives as if the Holy Spirit is just a bonus add-on, or worse, something we barely understand. So let’s clear the air.

First, it’s important to point out that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity—God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. He’s not lesser. He’s not an afterthought. He was there from the very beginning. Genesis 1:2 tells us, “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Jesus Himself confirmed the Spirit’s importance when in Matthew 28:19 He told the disciples to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

So if the Spirit is God, then He must also share in all of God’s characteristics—His holiness, His love, His power, His wisdom. Let’s break this down by looking at what makes up the personality of the Holy Spirit.

This might feel a little strange to hear, but the Holy Spirit has a personality—He has a mind, emotions, and will, just like us. Actually, we were made in His image, so our personalities are reflections of His.

Scripture shows this clearly. The Holy Spirit speaks as we see in Acts 10:19, He commands as we see in Acts 13:2, He teaches as seen in Luke 12:12, He intercedes for us in prayer as we see in Romans 8:26–27, and He even bears witness with our spirit that we belong to God as shown in Romans 8:16. You can’t say any of that about a lifeless force.

And here’s the game-changer: when we realize the Holy Spirit is a person, it shifts our relationship with Him from distant to personal. He becomes someone we can walk with, talk to, and listen for.

The Holy Spirit also has emotions! He can feel grief—Ephesians 4:30 tells us, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” He grieves when there’s disunity in the body of Christ, when we ignore Him, or when we walk in disobedience.

He also pours out love—Romans 5:5 says, “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” Love, as well as other attributes like joy, peace, and patience aren’t just random traits; they’re the fruit of the Spirit. That’s emotional depth. That’s a God who feels—and understands our emotions and feelings.

The Holy Spirit also has intellect and will!

1 Corinthians 2:10-11 says, “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God... no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

The Holy Spirit doesn’t guess—He knows. When He guides you, He’s not improvising. When He speaks truth into your life, it’s backed by eternal wisdom. John 16:13 says He will “guide you into all the truth.” This is divine intellect, friends—and it's available to you.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just feel and think—He chooses. He makes decisions. And His will is in complete harmony with the will of God the Father.

Ezekiel 36:26 tells us, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you…” That’s God’s will—to see us transformed. And the Spirit is the one who brings that change.

What does the Holy Spirit want? Simple: that all people come to know Jesus, walk in His love, and live transformed lives for His glory. That’s not just theology—that’s His mission, and we’re invited to be a part of it.

The second key about the Holy Spirit that is important to grasp is the Holy Spirit’s power!
